Hello Friends!

We invite you to join us for a public march and rally for Jobs, Justice, Climate – we need to ACT NOW!

When: Saturday, October 1st at 1:00pm

Please share the event and invite your friends online here:

Where: Rotary Park, Saskatoon

Why: In early November, provincial leaders will meet and consult the federal government to negotiate the content of Mr. Trudeau’s National Climate Strategy. This is the chance for provincial premiers to influence the federal government about their climate change policies and plans for the next 3-4 years (and maybe beyond).

It’s therefore a chance for us to compel our premiers to create a Peoples Climate Plan – one that aligns with the science of climate change, builds a 100% renewable energy economy, and one that ensures justice.

Yet in Saskatchewan, Brad Wall is the biggest national obstacle to making progress on climate change. He is the only Premier who is advocating against a carbon tax, he is the most vocal champion of new pipelines as well as the country’s oil and gas industry, and he is unwilling to invest in the new job-rich clean-energy economy which we need to create.

Did you know:

That Saskatchewan has the highest Greenhouse Gas Emissions per capita in the country (more than Alberta)?

That WASTE from Saskatchewan’s oil and gas industry accounts for more than 17% of those emissions? Waste including the venting and flaring of unwanted associated gas, the leaking of well heads and pipelines?

That oil and gas workers are suffering in rural areas because of the downturn in oil prices, but that there are almost no alternatives to oil and gas in those communities?

That the oil and gas industry is spilling on average twice a day in the province polluting lands and water? Remember the Husky oil spill that threatened the drinking water of over 70,000?

In the lead up to the fall meeting of premiers, it is up to us to tell Brad Wall, loudly and clearly, that we want a different energy future for Saskatchewan and Canada. In this spirit a provincial rally, to be held in Saskatoon, is being organized to put pressure on the Wall government demanding a just approach to climate change that would include:

A rapid shift from fossil fuels to renewables-based electricity and heating, and to electric vehicles, with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency

Retraining and resources for workers in carbon-intensive jobs so that they can fully participate in the clean energy economy

Unconditional respect for the inherent rights and title of the original caretakers of this land, starting with full implementation of United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

A shift, where possible, to local energy democracy, through community ownership of new clean energy systems

A move away from dependence on extractive industries to a balanced provincial economy

We hope you will attend the rally and march! We’ll meet at Rotary Park in Saskatoon at 1pm on Saturday, October 1st. We want hundreds of people out in the biggest showing of concern for our collective energy future ever.

If you are interesting in mobilizing people to attend this rally or organize a presence from your community, please contact Climate Justice Saskatchewan at climateactionsk@gmail.com

And our poster is attached, feel free to share! In solidarity,
