Prince Albert chapter mobilizes for climate justice & food security on Earth Day

The Council of Canadians Prince Albert chapter will celebrate Earth Day with a Seedy Saturday gathering and a climate justice march to City Hall.

The promotion for this on the chapter's Facebook page says, "We have the Earth Ball! As well as movies, speakers, music, and seeds, we have the Earth Ball for Earth Day. Join us as we have fun focusing attention on the need for environmental protection and the need to keep seeds in the Commons for food security. Where: John M. Cuelenaere Public Library. When: Saturday April 22, 9:30 am to 4:00 pm."

As noted on the Seeds of Diversity website, "Seedy Saturdays are fun, inexpensive events where you can swap and exchange seeds, get exciting varieties that other seed savers are sharing (as well as the stories that come with them), attend workshops and talks, meet vendors and buy seeds from seed companies."

The chapter also highlights, "At 2:00 pm there is a Climate, Jobs, and Justice Solidarity March from the John M. Cuelenaere Public Library to City Hall. Scattered around Memorial Square will be carbon footprints that we will read. We will take the footprints with us when we leave symbolically reducing our carbon footprint on Mother Earth. This is a Sister March to the Peoples Climate Movement April 29th in Washington, D.C. On the 100th day of Trump's administration, it protests the threat presented by Donald Trump to 'hard-won protections of our climate, health, and communities, and the rights of people of color, workers, indigenous people, immigrants, women, LGBTQIA, young people, and more'."

The national mobilizing website for the climate march adds, "On April 29th we will be in the streets across Canada, in solidarity with the march in Washington, DC, to show the world and our leaders that we will resist fossil fuel projects and policies that attack our people, our communities and our planet."

The march will demand:

1- Advance solutions to the climate crisis that are rooted in racial, social and economic justice and committed to protecting front-line communities and workers.
2- Protect our right to clean air, water, land, healthy communities and a world at peace.
3- Demand recognition of Indigenous Sovereignty, respect for existing Treaties and the right of First Nations to Free, Prior and Informed Consent for all projects on their traditional and unceded territories.
4- Immediately take steps to support immigrants, refugees and communities of color and LGBTQ2I communities impacted by the attacks on them south of the border and by the dislocation caused by global climate change.
5- Ensure public funds and investments create good paying green jobs that provide a family-sustaining wage and benefits and preserve workers’ rights, including the right to unionize.
6- Fund investments in our communities, people and environment to transition to a new clean and renewable energy economy that works for all.
7- Protect our basic rights to a free press, protest and free speech.

To date, we know that the Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Quill Plains, London and Hamilton chapters are also mobilizing for the Peoples Climate March.
