Sudbury chapter to take part in #ClimateMarch2017

[ https://canadians.org/blog/sudbury-chap ... emarch2017 ]

April 28, 2017 - 1:29 pm

The Council of Canadians Sudbury chapter will be participating in The People's Climate march in their community on April 29.

The outreach has highlighted, "In September 2014, Sudbury participated in the largest climate march ever worldwide. We are back and want everyone to know Sudbury is still one of the many communities that is leading the world in tackling the climate crisis. Join us on April 29th at noon near the Bridge of Nations in downtown Sudbury. We can build a better world because of the climate crisis. It is forcing us to connect and not be selfish. Community is key and will save us in the end. We hope you will join us."

The Sudbury Star reports, "On Saturday, Sudburians will join activists around the world and march to create political will for real climate action, the creation of clean tech jobs and for what they call 'climate justice'. The march in Sudbury is one of more than 300 happening internationally and is inspired by the historic People's Climate Mobilization in Washington, D.C., on that same day."

The marches will demand:

1- Advance solutions to the climate crisis that are rooted in racial, social and economic justice and committed to protecting front-line communities and workers.
2- Protect our right to clean air, water, land, healthy communities and a world at peace.
3- Demand recognition of Indigenous Sovereignty, respect for existing Treaties and the right of First Nations to Free, Prior and Informed Consent for all projects on their traditional and unceded territories.
4- Immediately take steps to support immigrants, refugees and communities of color and LGBTQ2I communities impacted by the attacks on them south of the border and by the dislocation caused by global climate change.
5- Ensure public funds and investments create good paying green jobs that provide a family-sustaining wage and benefits and preserve workers’ rights, including the right to unionize.
6- Fund investments in our communities, people and environment to transition to a new clean and renewable energy economy that works for all.
7- Protect our basic rights to a free press, protest and free speech.

To date, we know that the Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Quill Plains (Wynyard), London and Hamilton chapters are also supporting the Peoples Climate March.

Edmonton chapter takes part in #ClimateMarch2017 to Alberta Legislature

[ https://canadians.org/blog/edmonton-cha ... egislature ]

April 29, 2017 - 5:13 pm

The Council of Canadians Edmonton chapter took part in the People's Climate March to the Alberta Legislature today.

The outreach had noted, "We look forward to seeing you at Churchill square for the People's Climate March - Edmonton style! We will gather between 12 and 1 pm to paint signs and to take pictures that will be sent to our MLAs and posted to social media. By 1 pm we will be sent on our way by an elder and march down Jasper Ave. Once at the Legislature, speeches will be made by strong women such as Jennifer Welchman from the UofA, Roberta Laurie, author and instructor at Macewan, and Michelle Myers from Indigenous Climate Action. These women each have a story that will insipire us about how to talk about climate change and use practical solutions to lead us into the sunny Albertan future."

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley supports the 1.1 million barrel per day Energy East pipeline, the 890,000 barrel per day Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline, and the 830,000 barrels per day Keystone XL pipeline. She also supports the Canada-China Free Trade Agreement in which the Chinese government is seeking to lift investment restrictions on Chinese state owned enterprises investing in the tar sands.

The Canadian Press recently reported, "Alberta's NDP premier has a message for anyone in her government who is thinking of going to British Columbia to campaign for the New Democrats in that province's election: Think again. The B.C. NDP are locked in a tight election campaign and one of the party's key planks is opposition to the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion from Alberta through B.C. It's fairly common for members from different provincial wings of the same party to help in each other's campaigns. But Premier Rachel Notley says it would be difficult for anybody who works for her government to support candidates that oppose a project so crucial to Alberta's interest."

In November 2015, the Notley government (which had taken power just six months earlier) announced their 'climate leadership plan'.

At that time, Maclean's magazine reported, "When Notley was asked about Oil Change International’s tweet that this means 'no new tar sands growth', the premier furrowed her brow and said no. Furrowing and shaking their heads along with her were four oil sands executives invited to share the announcement, from Suncor, Shell, Cenovus and Canadian Natural Resources Ltd."

The Globe and Mail notes, "The tar sands currently emits 70 megatonnes of greenhouse gases a year. Under Alberta's 'climate leadership' plan, that would be allowed to rise to a cap of 100 megatonnes a year. That represents a 43 per cent increase in the carbon emissions from the tar sands. Beyond the cap, the Alberta plan allows for another 10 megatonnes of emissions a year for new upgrading and cogeneration facilities."

When the plan was announced, it was reported that the various measures would cost producers less than $1 per barrel of oil. The Maclean's article highlights, "If the rhetoric and action are enough to make the next pipeline plans actually go through, then the plan could pay for itself."

Last month, the Toronto Star reported this caution, "Environment Canada is projecting that, based on policies in place [as of November 2016], the country was on pace to miss its reduction target for greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, pumping out at least 30 per cent more than promised that year."

Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert & Quill Plains chapters support People's Climate March

[ https://canadians.org/blog/regina-saska ... mate-march ]

April 17, 2017 - 10:10 am

The Council of Canadians Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Quill Plains chapters support the 'People's Climate March Regina' that will happen on April 29.

The Facebook promotion for the march notes, "We are pleased to announce that Regina will participate in the international People's Climate Marches on Saturday April 29th at 12:00 pm at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building! We will gather to celebrate our interdependent relationship to each other, and our dependent relationship to the Earth." [ https://www.facebook.com/events/494113544311885/ ]

The national mobilizing website for the march adds, "On April 29th we will be in the streets across Canada, in solidarity with the march in Washington, DC, to show the world and our leaders that we will resist fossil fuel projects and policies that attack our people, our communities and our planet."

The march will demand:

Eleven chapters rally at #ClimateMarch2017 in Toronto

[ https://canadians.org/blog/eleven-chapt ... 17-toronto ]

April 29, 2017 - 12:55 pm

Eleven Council of Canadians chapters rallied for climate justice in Toronto at noon-hour today during the Ontario-Quebec regional meeting.

The Guelph, Peterborough-Kawarthas, South Niagara, Windsor, London, Quinte, Sudbury, Northumberland, Thunder Bay, Hamilton, Toronto and Halton chapters were present at the rally at Allan Gardens in downtown Toronto. The Sudbury chapter is also participating in the climate march in their community today.

The outreach for the march and rally highlighted, "We’ll march to protect our right to clean air, water, land, healthy communities and a world at peace. We’ll march to tell our Canadian political representatives that we expect them to do more: to reduce GHG emissions and curb climate change, to transition to a new clean and renewable energy economy that works for all, to respect and uphold Indigenous rights."

It adds, "We’ll march in solidarity with the Peoples Climate March in Washington, DC and with immigrants, refugees, communities of colour and LGBTQ2I communities impacted by physical and political attacks and by the dislocation caused by global climate change."

The Trudeau government's climate record includes approvals of the:
• Woodfibre LNG terminal = 0.81 million tonnes of carbon pollution a year
• Pacific NorthWest LNG terminal = 11.8 to 14 million tonnes of emissions a year
• TransCanada NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. fracked gas pipeline = 1.2 to 1.4 million tonnes of upstream emissions a year
• Enbridge Line 3 tar sands pipeline = 19 to 26 million tonnes of upstream emissions a year
• Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline = 20 to 26 million tonnes of emissions a year

Despite the cumulative impacts of the 890,000 barrel per day Kinder Morgan pipeline and the 760,000 barrel per day Line 3 pipeline, the Liberals are not ruling out the 1.1 million barrel per day Energy East pipeline and back the 830,000 barrel per day TransCanada Keystone XL pipeline (recently approved by US President Donald Trump).

Last month, the Toronto Star reported this caution, "Environment Canada is projecting that, based on policies in place last November, the country was on pace to miss its reduction target for greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, pumping out at least 30 per cent more than promised that year."

This month, the Trudeau government announced it would delay by three years its plan to regulate cuts to methane emissions in the oil and gas sector. Andrew Read at the Pembina Institute estimates the delay will mean up to 55 million tonnes of methane will be released that otherwise would have been stopped.

Ottawa chapter joins #ClimateMarch2017 to U.S. Embassy

[ https://canadians.org/blog/ottawa-chapt ... c.facebook ]

April 29, 2017 - 9:02 pm

The Council of Canadians Ottawa chapter participated in the People's Climate March today. The march begin at Ottawa City Hall and made its way to the U.S. Embassy.

The outreach highlighted:

"We invite you to join the Peoples Climate Movement on Saturday, April 29th; as we march to:
- Advance solutions to the climate crisis rooted in racial, social and economic justice, and committed to protecting front-line communities and workers.
- Protect our right to clean air, water, land, healthy communities and a world at peace.
- Immediately stop attacks on immigrants, communities of color, indigenous and tribal people and lands and workers.
- Ensure public funds and investments create good paying jobs that provide a family-sustaining wage and benefits and preserve workers’ rights, including the right to unionize.
- Fund investments in our communities, people and environment to transition to a new clean and renewable energy economy that works for all, not an economy that feeds the machinery of war.
- Protect our basic rights to a free press, protest and free speech."

This climate justice march took place on the 100th day of U.S. President Donald Trump's administration.

The Ottawa Citizen reports, "Cherie Wong, an organizer of the Ottawa march, said the U.S. president 'is a threat to the future of our planet, the safety of our communities and the health of our families.'"

The Canadian Press adds, "Trump's administration is considering withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, which more than 190 countries signed in hopes of curbing global warming. Trump has also proposed deep cuts for the Environmental Protection Agency. In his campaign, Trump called climate change a hoax. Last month he kept a promise to the coal industry by undoing climate-change rules put in place by Barack Obama."

Yesterday, Reuters reported, "Trump signed an executive order on Friday to extend offshore oil and gas drilling to areas that have been off limits... The order could lead to a reversal of bans on drilling across swathes of the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans and the U.S. Gulf of Mexico that Obama had sought to protect from development in the wake of the huge BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010."

Regina chapter takes part in #ClimateMarch2017 to Saskatchewan Legislature

[ https://canadians.org/blog/regina-chapt ... egislature ]

April 30, 2017 - 8:06 am

The Council of Canadians Regina chapter marched to the Saskatchewan Legislature yesterday to demand provincial action to address climate change.

The outreach had noted, "We are pleased to announce that Regina will participate in the international People's Climate Marches on Saturday April 29th at 12:00 pm at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building! We will gather to celebrate our interdependent relationship to each other, and our dependent relationship to the Earth. We will march to: 1) Demonstrate support for Saskatchewan showing leadership in addressing the climate crisis. 2) Ask Saskatchewan to do it's part by signing the Pan-Canadian Framework on Climate Change and committing to emissions targets that will enable Canada to meet its Paris Climate Commitment."

Afterwards, CBC reported, "Regina residents held their own climate march in front of the province's legislative assembly Saturday, joining in spirit with thousands of other marchers across Canada and the world. The Regina contingent was there to demonstrate its desire for the Saskatchewan government to take a leading role in addressing climate change."

DeSmog Canada has highlighted, "Saskatchewan sports the highest per-capita emissions of any province: at last count, the province accounts for 10.3 per cent of the country’s emissions despite only boasting three per cent of its people. Between 1990 and 2013, its total emissions increased by 66 per cent, compared to Alberta (the second highest in the category) which increased by 53 per cent. The oil, gas and mining sector accounts for 34 per cent of the province’s emissions, with the electricity sector chipping in an additional 21 per cent (close to half of the province’s power is generated by burning coal)."

Premier Brad Wall has opposed calls for provincial and national climate change action, promoted "clean coal" and carbon capture and storage at the COP21 climate summit in Paris, refuses to phase-out coal-fired power plants, and opposes the national carbon tax (without proposing other climate action strategies). In his government's May 2016 Throne Speech, he appeared to both deny climate change and attack the Leap Manifesto.
