The Council of Canadians Mid Island chapter took part in Earth, Water and Wild Foods Day in Nanaimo on April 23.

The promotion for the day highlighted, "Come celebrate Earth, Water, and Wild Foods Day - a free festival-style community event at Bowen Park from 11 am -3 pm. There will be something for everyone with workshops, demos, interactive community displays, children’s activities, food vendors, and live music all honouring our local environment!"

The chapter had a table with a 'Response Board' at this gathering.

Chapter activist Lynne Alton explains, "On our Response Board (a 4' by 4' upright wooden board with cork on one side), we asked the following question: 'How can we re-awaken a deep connection with our Planet Earth?' and invited people attending the event to write their answers on colorful stickies and post them on the board. In asking this question, our intention was to stimulate thought about our relationship with Earth (nature) and, in turn, how this can inform our actions."

Alton notes, "Over fifty people (both young and old) responded with answers such as:

• 'Go outside everyday. Just see the sky, the water, touch the earth, breath deep!'
• 'Grow (some, as much as we can) our own food. Start small and enjoy every moment of it.'
• 'Walk on the Earth barefoot.'
• 'Slow down. Build Community. Get your hands dirty. Listen to those who have a connection to the land.'"

The chapter will be discussing follow-up activities at their next meeting. That could include an article in their local newspaper, having the Response Board in another public space and inviting new responses, further exploring the question posed on the Response Board at a potluck meal.
