REGINA----“The Regina Chapter of the Council of Canadians is not surprised and consistently perplexed that the Government of Saskatchewan is continuing to spend more of taxpayer’s money in areas where energy use continues to increase instead of where jobs could be created, going in a sustainable way and yet they continues to do nothing,” said Jim Elliott, Chairperson of the Regina Chapter of the Council of Canadians, following the 2019-20 Budget presentation.

“They seem to be going blindly on the treadmill of more tax dollars spent on more wasteful energy use when it could be increasing efficiencies and saving money. We could be creating thousands of sustainable jobs in the energy efficiency and renewable energy sector saving the economies of cities like Estevan from the inevitable drop off the cliff when we must drop coal-fired electricity from our electrical grid. We could be decommissioning thousands of orphaned or abandoned oil wells saving our limited water resources for our future.” Mr. Elliott added.

“We, in Saskatchewan,” Mr. Elliott continued, “have the capacity to phase out coal-powered electricity, eliminate fugitive emissions from the oil & gas industry and significantly reduce our demands for fossil fuel-based energy. We could be reducing energy use in schools teaching our children they have a future in this province. We need to start now and help this country meet our commitments in the Paris Accord and the Pan Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change.”

The Regina Chapter of the Council of Canadians has produced a petition asking the Government of Saskatchewan to take comprehensive action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is being signed by Saskatchewan residents all over the province.
