Climate breakdown and social murder - Some vocabulary and grim numbers to consider.

In 1845, Friedrich Engels used the term "social murder" in his book, The Condition of the Working-Class in England, to describe the situation in which "the class which at present holds social and political control places hundreds of proletarians [workers, people] in such a position that they inevitably meet a too early and an unnatural death." DARA, an independent non-profit research organization, has estimated that 400,000 people die each year as a result of climate change, and that if current carbon policies (that would include expanding the tar sands, building more pipelines, subsidies to the fossil fuel industry) do not change, the number could increase to 700,000 people a year by 2030. - February 11, 2013 [ https://daraint.org/2013/02/11/4385/new ... diutIdKvXQ ]

A recent report by Global Witness found that highly profitable oil and gas corporations are now gearing up to invest $4.9 trillion in new field exploration. ExxonMobil is number 1 on their list of "Top 10 companies by forecast capital expenditure in new fields - 2020-2029" with $149 billion allocated for oil projects, $18 billion for gas projects. - April 23, 2019 [ https://www.globalwitness.org/en/press- ... -aLBwORkVc ]

Furthermore, Forbes recently reported, "Every year, the world’s five largest publicly owned oil and gas companies spend approximately $200 million on lobbying designed to control, delay or block binding climate-motivated policy." That article notes that just one of those transnationals, ExxonMobil, spends about $41 million annually on such tactics. - March 25, 2019 [ https://www.forbes.com/sites/niallmccar ... 61bfc77c4f ]
