REGINA----“We are pleased with the court’s decision to deem constitutionally valid the federal government implement a carbon pollution pricing system across Canada,” said Jim Elliott, Chairperson of the Regina Chapter of the Council of Canadians after Regina’s National School Climate Strike held on the steps of the Saskatchewan Legislature.

“We are the generation that will help our children save the planet from climate change. We are working with thousands of other communities across 70 countries,” said Mr. Elliott. “Premier Moe and his supporters including other provinces and MP Andrew Scheer are not dealing with the existential threats to our lives on this planet. We must take action today and many tomorrows to reduce our emissions and allow the planet to heal itself.”

“We have the opportunity to be the powerhouse for just transition in Canada if we choose to meet collectively and accept the challenge. Saskatchewan residents have the opportunity to lead the country in renewable energy production putting many out of work tradespeople back to work in their own communities,” reported Mr. Elliott. “Even the City of Regina on October 29, 2018 proposed to join the growing number of municipalities from around the world and commit to being a 100% renewable city by 2050.”

Mr. Elliott concluded, “There is one more existential threat that Premier Moe and others aren’t addressing when they refuse to visit and view the 500+ School Climate Strike students just outside his offices. That is the threat that these children soon to be voters will remember the next time he wants their vote. Without clear decisive action to evert climate disasters today, he will not be receiving their support.”

The Attorneys General Fighting The Carbon Tax Meet In Saskatoon

The Government of Saskatchewan is hosting the Attorneys General from the provinces across the country that are fighting the Trudeau Carbon Tax. Saskatchewan was the first province to stand up to the Trudeau government’s ineffective, job killing Carbon Tax as an infringement on provincial authority under the Constitution. The Government of Saskatchewan was supported by Ontario and New Brunswick at the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal. Manitoba, Alberta and Quebec have also joined the Saskatchewan appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Today the Ministers from Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick and their legal counsel as well as counsel from Manitoba are collaborating on legal arguments and discussing additional legal strategies to defeat the ineffective Trudeau imposed Carbon Tax.

“It is a honour to be meeting with Minister Schweitzer, Minister Downey and Minister Anderson-Mason in person to discuss and coordinate our legal cases challenging the Trudeau government carbon tax,” Saskatchewan’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General Don Morgan said. “This application is critically important to asserting provincial jurisdiction. Thus we want to ensure that we have the most cohesive and consistent legal arguments which is why it is essential that the provinces met together today to further define and align our plans moving forward.”

“Ontario continues to stand united with our provincial partners in fighting against this federal overreach into provincial jurisdiction and is committed to using every tool at our disposal to protect the people of Ontario from Justin Trudeau’s tax on everything,” Ontario’s Attorney General Doug Downey said. “I am honoured to meet with my provincial partners to discuss our approach to fight the federal government’s job-killing carbon tax that makes life more expensive for hard-working individuals, families and businesses.”

“Alberta is proud to stand with our provincial allies against this federal overreach into provincial jurisdiction,” Alberta’s Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Doug Schweitzer said. “This one-size-fits-all tax is all economic pain with no environmental gain and ignores our constitutional right to make policy choices that reflect local conditions and circumstances.”

“I am pleased to be here today representing New Brunswick in this coalition of provinces fighting against Justin Trudeau’s Carbon Tax,” New Brunswick’s Minister of Justice and Office of the Attorney General Andrea Anderson-Mason said. “There are better ways to reduce emissions and hard-working taxpayers should not be punished for heating their homes and driving to work.” -30-

Provincial ministers in Saskatoon to plan strategy as carbon tax fight moves to the Supreme Court

Politicians fighting the federal carbon tax say action is needed on climate change, but remedies should be left to the provinces.

"Climate change is caused by human activities and is a serious threat … but it is a challenge that the provinces are equipped to deal with," Saskatchewan Attorney General Don Morgan said following a meeting Tuesday in Saskatoon.

The meeting included the attorneys general of Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario and New Brunswick, who made a public statement Tuesday afternoon about their upcoming hearing at the Supreme Court of Canada.

Morgan said the cost of the legal challenges will run in the "hundreds of thousands" of dollars in Saskatchewan alone.

Under the federal government's pan-Canadian climate framework, all provinces are required to come up with a method to price carbon in order to reduce climate-altering carbon emissions.

On May 3, the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal ruled in a 3-2 decision that the federal government's carbon tax, imposed on provinces deemed not to have sufficient plans of their own, is constitutional.
