MAN, COMPANY FINED $11,200 FOR UNAUTHORIZED SHORELINE ALTERATION

A Lloydminster man and a numbered company were fined a total of $11,200 in Spiritwood Provincial Court on Tuesday for the unauthorized alteration of the shoreline at Birch Lake.

James Reinhart was convicted under The Environmental Management and Protection Act for shoreline alteration without a permit at Birch Lake, northeast of Glaslyn and fined $9,800. The company, 627050 Saskatchewan Ltd., was fined $1,400 for failing to comply with an Environmental Protection Order to clean up the altered site and restore the shoreline to its original state. In addition, a court order was issued for remediation to be completed within 30 days.

The investigation began in August 2009, with a complaint to the Ministry of Environment office in Spiritwood that a significant amount of sand had been added to the shoreline at Birch Lake.

“Anyone who conducts work in and around water should contact the Ministry of Environment office in advance of any work being done to get clarification on permitting requirements,” Environment Compliance and Field Services Executive Director Kevin Callele said. “Ministry staff can help ensure plans achieve desired environmental outcomes while meeting environmental regulations, and issue the provincial permits required to carry out the work.”
