The Council of Canadians Montreal chapter took part in a water justice bus tour yesterday. Chapter activist Abdul Pirani shared the photo (above) with us.

The outreach for the tour noted, "Hey, Detroit guests! Take a guided tour of the several city neighborhoods with local grassroots leaders who will describe community issues including water shutoffs, home foreclosures, gentrification, environmental justice, low wage jobs in growing tourism-entertainment sectors, and poverty. This invitation is open to registered participants of the 2nd International Gathering of Social Movements on Water, June 8-11, 2017. Space is limited to the first 40 people to sign up."

The promotion for the social movement gathering itself highlights, "We are excited to invite water warriors to Michigan to share and strategy on the state of the movement for water rights in our communities. The 2nd International Gathering brings together people directly impacted by water struggles and social movement water groups, plus -- water rights attorneys and policy makers, researchers, scholars, social workers, youth and elders from across the U.S., First Nations and international countries."

It adds, "Your participation will strengthen the global movement for the human right to water and sanitation in every community. All people have a right to access clean, safe affordable water. No one should be denied potable water and sanitary conditions because of the inability to pay for it or adequate infrastructure."

In mid-April, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department began shutting off water to residential customers who are behind in their bill payments. About 18,000 households are at risk of losing their water and sewage services.

The Council of Canadians maintains that this is a violation of the United Nations recognized human rights to water and sanitation.

We have been working in solidarity with water justice activists in Detroit since May 2014 and will continue to do so until this struggle is won.
