Residents to celebrate defeat of proposed mega quarry near Bobcaygeon, July 12

The Council of Canadians has long supported community opposition to proposed quarry near Bobcaygeon, Ontario.

Council of Canadians honorary chairperson spoke at a fundraiser in April 2014 for residents fighting the quarry.

In March 2014, Kawartha Lakes This Week reported, "The township of Trent Lakes approved the quarry’s zoning application in 2012. Peterborough County also signed off on the application last June. The quarry, owned by Dewdney Mountain Farms Ltd. of Elmvale, is located on Ledge Road, just north of Bobcaygeon. Residents opposed to it fought for two years to have the application scrapped but it was approved in 2012. It sits on about 400 acres and is a crushed and dimensional limestone quarry. They object to the impact it will have on their quality of life, property values, the environment, wildlife and the potential damage to infrastructure from trucks hauling aggregates through Bobcaygeon."

That article adds, "[Once the quarry] is operational, the number of trucks using Highway 36 will increase as full operations are phased in. That will mean trucks going through Bobcaygeon at the rate of 400 per day, or one every 1.8 minutes. [The quarry is also close] to Nogies Creek, the wetlands surrounding it, including a provincial fish sanctuary and one of the largest deer yards in Peterborough County."

Kawartha 411 now reports, "The owners of a proposed new mega quarry near Bobcaygeon have withdrawn their final appeal in a multi year battle to get the quarry approved."

That article adds, "Residents are holding a celebration and fundraiser on July 12 to help recoup some of the money spent by the opponents. The Limestone Blues Celebration and Fundraiser will be held at the Kawartha Coffee Company in Bobcaygeon at 6pm Thursday July 12th!"

The Council of Canadians extends its congratulations to Pat Warren, Becki Jory, Ruth Pillsworth and all who fought to stop this quarry.
