Chopra's Advice

March 07, 2009

To the Editor,

It now certainly seems that the USA is into a full- blown recession, with Canada being sucked into this mess through the FTA and the NAFTA - our governments have allowed thousands of Canadian businesses to be bought up by mostly American companies and corporations.

Add to that the semi-secret ongoing meetings between high-ranking officials from the US, Canada and Mexico [which, by the way, included military officers] in a prologue to a great sounding agreement titled the "Security Prosperity Partnership" [SPP]. This is supposed to deliver these three countries, and its citizens, to a utopia to be named the North American Union [NAU]. As the famous American TV host, Dr. Phil, would say, "How's that working out for you?!"

Americans and Canadians, as well as a great number of people from other areas of the globe, have a good deal of confidence that President Obama will do his best to change the damage done to the US economy during the eight years of war and mismanagement by the Bush administration.

However, the latter is not the only administration to blame for this recession. It can be traced back to the anti-regulatory, anti-labour and anti-government policies of Ronald Reagan. Therefore, the challenge to President Obama and his administration is absolutely formidable.

There is one person who has a number of suggestions for President Barack Obama. That person is the author Deepak Chopra. He is acknowledged as one of the world's greatest leaders in the field of mind-body medicine. He is the author of over 50 books.

The following nine points stated by Chopra are those he says are needed to change the American war economy to a peace economy:

1. Scale out arms dealing and make it illegal by the year 2020.
2. Write into every defence contract a requirement for a peacetime project.
3. Subsidize conversion of military companies to peaceful uses with tax incentives and direct funding.
4. Convert military basis to housing for the poor.
5. Phase out all foreign military bases.
6. Require military personnel to devote part of their time to rebuilding infrastructure.
7. Call a moratorium on future weapons technologies.
8. Reduce armaments like destroyers and submarines that have no use against terrorism; they were intended to defend against a superpower
enemy that no longer exists.
9. Fully fund social services and take the balance out of the defence and homeland security budgets.

The nine points stated above are only part of Deepak Chopra's message to President Obama. Chopra concludes that the present high profits of the government-subsidized military industrial complex in the US ensures that there can be no global peace. The American people want peace. The President must back up his vision for change with economic reality.
