Toronto Turmoil

June 30, 2010

To the Editor,

The present global situation is quite bizarre. When I was a young man, about 70 years ago, we had institutions that were known as "jails." This is where we kept the law-breakers, behind closed doors, in buildings surrounded by a high wire fence. Today we have progressed to a state where our global leaders, our law-makers, meet behind closed doors surrounded by a high wire fence.

To ensure that global leaders could do their planning without interruption, our government had charged the Toronto police force with that responsibility. It was also arranged that a substantial number of police personnel from Edmonton, Calgary and Montreal [the latter complete with horses] would assist in keeping the unruly hordes on the outside of the fence from tearing it down.

It appears that the meeting of the G8 and the G20 was orchestrated to deal with the greatly increased national debt in many countries that was incurred following the catastrophic financial disaster in 2008. Where were our global leaders and their law enforcement institutions when the great financial corporations criminally trashed the world’s economic system to the tune of trillions of dollars?

Due to the wonders of computers and the Internet, the majority of people in the industrialized nations, including the thousands of peaceful protesters marching on the streets of Toronto, are much better informed today than they generally were during the Great Depression of the 1930's. People everywhere are concerned. They had a reason to be anxious. Global leaders decided to cut government deficits, which were
contributing to a drastic increase in the national debt of many nations. In short, the G20 would stick the public with the bill for the bankers’ crisis!

While thousands were marching on the streets of Toronto, police stood by and watched when some protesters set fires to two police cars. What was this all about? Eventually about 900 people were arrested, including a few journalists. Most were detained in small crowded cells for a few hours, some as long as two days. A number of those arrested suffered injuries inflicted by the police. Apparently no one was allowed to contact legal help.

The type of vandalism that took place during the G20 is destructive, useless and shameful. On a much larger scale, it can be compared to the bombing, the destruction of life and property damage caused by wars like Viet Nam and Iraq. It is a blatant demonstration of violent power.

The billion dollar Toronto G20 boondoggle may get the Conservative party more media coverage in the run-up to a fall election or was it just a test to see how Canadians would react to a two day police state?
