Statistics Canada's quarterly survey estimates total pigs on Saskatchewan farms at 825 000 head as of July 1, 2011 - up 9.3 per cent from the July 1, 2010 estimate of 755 000 head.

The survey reported:

 a 4 per cent increase in the breeding herd from 2010
 a 10 per cent increase in market hog inventories from 2010
Farrowings in the July-September 2011 period are expected to rise 6.4 per cent compared to the third quarter 2010, and the October-December 2011 farrowings are expected to rise by 1.1 per cent from fourth quarter 2010.
International exports of Saskatchewan hogs increased by 23 per cent in the first two quarters in 2011. It is estimated that there are 385 farms in Saskatchewan reporting hogs, the same as July 1, 2010, but up from 380 on April 1, 2011.
Western Canada's July 1, 2011 total inventory of pigs was 5.0 million head – up1.5 per cent from a year ago. Alberta’s total hog inventory is down 0.3 per cent, while Manitoba had a 0.4 per cent increase.
Eastern Canada's total inventory rose to 6.9 million head, up 0.3 per cent compared to 2010.
Canadian pig inventory rose by 0.8 per cent to 11.9 million head on July 1, 2011.
 The size of the breeding herd dropped by 1.2 per cent and the market hog inventory increased by 1.1 per cent from July 2010.
 For the second half of 2011, Canadian farrowings are expected to rise by 0.1 per cent compared to 2010 levels.
 The number of farms reporting hogs declined by 2.7 percent from 2010 to 6 920 farms.
With a few unpopulated sow barns sold late in 2010, and some open barns still available, the Saskatchewan sow herd could further increase in 2011 with a period of sustained profitability.
Feed prices will be a key factor to watch going forward as price fluctuations will strongly influence producer profitability.
