Letter to the Editor;

Re: Manitoba may budge on hog manure rules, (Western Producer 29 Jan. 2015); the agriculture minister is working with the hog industry to resolve a manure management impasse. [ http://www.producer.com/2015/01/manitob ... ure-rules/ ]

Manitoba hog producers have said the regulations are too costly because an anaerobic digester for a small pig barn may cost $1 million.

Manitoba Pork proposed a cheaper alternative: building additional earthen storage structures, commonly known as lagoons, to separate the liquid and solid manure.

Agriculture minister, Kostyshyn needs to be reminded of what Manitoba's Conservation & Water Stewardship minister, G. Mackintosh, said in his letter to the Brandon Sun, 24 Jun. 2014, concerning this matter before he make some rash promises, Note: It also addresses odour control.

Quote: We are not prepared to weaken the Save Lake Winnipeg Act and allow unrestricted province-wide hog production in Manitoba at the expense of the environment. Any pilot project proposal coming forward from the hog industry to the province must demonstrate zero negative impact on water quality and include effective odour control measures. Unquote. Furthermore, building additional earthen storage structures (lagoons) as proposed by Manitoba pork would contribute to even more gas emissions than the province could undertake in accordance with the targets set in legislation of the Kyoto protocol.

Storage of excess manure in such a manner will also result in even more leaching and present even more dangers of pollution to contaminate the water table.

Appropriately, such storage is categorized and recognized as hazardous waste.
