Statistics Canada’s quarterly survey estimates total pigs on Saskatchewan farms at 1,340,000 head on July 1, 2006 – down 4 per cent from the July 1, 2005 estimate of 1,395,000 head.
Hog prices softened in the fall of 2005 and have remained relatively low.
The survey reported: a 1 per cent increase in the breeding herd from 2005; and a 5 per cent decrease in market hog inventories from 2005.
Farrowings in the July-September 2006 period are expected to be down 2 per cent from third quarter 2005, and October-December 2006 farrowings are expected to be up 2 per cent from fourth quarter 2005.

EXCERPT: UNITED STATES
U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1, 2006 was 60.9 million head. This was up slightly from June 1, 2005 and up one percent from March 1, 2006. Breeding inventory, at 6.06 million head, was up one percent from both last year and from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 54.9 million head, was up slightly from last year and up two percent from last quarter.
