Press Release: 4th International Uranium Film Festival Rio de Janeiro 2014

And the Yellow Oscar Winners are...

Rio de Janeiro’s 4th International Uranium Film Festival awarded 13 films from 11 countries: Argentina, Brazil, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Poland, Turkey, UK and Ukraine. Five films received the Yellow Oscar and eight films a Special Recognition.

“After 4 years, after organizing International Uranium Film festivals in 3 continents and 5 countries, I have to confess: It’s not easy to make a film festival like ours.

A film festival about an issue that most of the people prefer to ignore.

Nuclear power, atomic bombs, people suffering from cancer, uranium 235, U 236, U 238, Cesium 137...

The nuclear issue is very technical, sometimes ugly and sometimes hidden by officials and nuclear industry”, said festival director Norbert G. Suchanek at the Museum of Modern Art Cinema opening the Award Ceremony.

Suchanek: “For that it is also not easy to make films about that issue too.

Not everyone involved in the nuclear business or people affected want to speak openly about it.

In addition it’s a huge challenge to film something that you cannot see, hear or smell, something that has no color, no taste and even no sound, but something that still can kill you or can hurt your next generation, something like radioactivity.

Nuclear filmmakers sometimes risk their lives or their careers to do what they have to do.

And the Uranium Film Festival has the duty to honor these filmmakers and their work with the Yellow Oscar Award and a special recognition.”

Norbert G. Suchanek: “We believe in our filmmakers! And they believe in us! Together we grow! Together we sail against all waves and winds. Together we win.”
