Cameco is working to make more dreams a reality for women with cancer.

The Touchdown for Dreams program, which is a partnership between Cameco, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, is expanding to help give more women a good experience to remember during their cancer journey.

They can now help 10 women and the funding for each dream has gone up to $10,000, president and CEO of Cameco Tim Gitzel said on Wednesday.

Prince Albert’s own Marilyn Young was one of the women chosen for a dream last year and she is excited to see the expansion in the program.

She said the experience made “lasting memories,” from the extravagant gala to meeting some of the Roughriders and finally the cruise Young and her husband enjoyed.

“The actual dream itself, it made lasting memories that we’ll never forget,” Young said. “They are seared into our memories and that takes away some of the negative things the cancer treatment could have brought. I think the positives far outweigh the negatives.”

She wants to spread the word to other cancer patients in Prince Albert and around the province.

“It not only helps the cancer patient -- to see the cancer patient happy, smiling and positive, that also heals the family members and the friends,” Young said. “They don’t always see the negative pain or the fatigue the patient is going through -- they see the positive things that a dream can bring to a cancer patient.”

Gitzel said that is why they started the Touchdown for Dreams.

“We are just a small, small part of it at Cameco,” he said. “It is really about the Cancer Agency and the patients. They do this every day.”

Cameco wants to help make a difference in their lives, he said.

Cameco out-masters the master

I think I read about this in a Kurt Vonnegut short story: a company produces vast amounts of radioactive waste that frequently burst from tailings ponds into river systems, a company that produces the key element for nuclear weapons and genetic damage, dealing death far and wide, funds women on their "Cancer Journey!"

What a euphemism! What chutzpah! What insensitivity! Good one Cameco public relations, you have out-mastered the master of cynical satire.
