Anishinabek Nation Asks Canadian Senate not to Exempt Small Nuclear Reactors from Environmental Assessment

Grand Chief Glen Hare of the Anishinabek Nation has written to the Chair of the Senate Committee on Energy, Environment and Natural Resources, requesting the Committee to reject the idea of exempting Small Modular Nuclear Reactors of a certain size form any form of Environmental Assessment — an exemption that has been urged by the Canadian nuclear industry, including CNL, and the Canadian nuclear regulator, CNSC.

In his letter, the Grand Chief has cited previous resolutions passed by the Anishinabek Nation:

(1) against the dumping of radioactive wastes of any kind — high-level, intermediate-level, or low-level — in Anishinabek Nation territory (covering a significant portion of the province of Ontario);

(2) articulating five principles agreed upon by the Anishinabek Nation and the Iroquois Caucus in regard to the planned abandonment and ever-increasing transport of radioactive waste; and

(3) against the development and deployment of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors in resource-rich areas (such as Ontario’s Ring of Fire) or in remote communities in the northern parts of Canada.

For the convenience of readers we have linked the Grand Chief’s letter to the CCNR web site.
