The Council of Canadians Victoria chapter attended the 'All Nations' Gathering Against Kinder Morgan' last night.

The promotion noted, "Please come together for a community potluck feast, speakers and music in solidarity with W̱SÁNEĆ Nations and fellow community members against the tar sands, Kinder Morgan and all dangerous fossil fuel expansion, threatening climate, coast, indigenous sovereignty, Douglas Treaty and water rights. ...Please bring a potluck item with ingredients listed for those with food allergies. Smoked salmon, with vegetarian options will be provided by the organizers."

The W̱SÁNEĆ or Saanich are Indigenous nations whose territory includes southern Vancouver Island and the southern edge of the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

The outreach highlights, "This is a fundraising event for Pull Together-legal defense for the Coldwater, Squamish and Tsleil-waututh First Nations fighting Kinder Morgan in court and for the work of the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, Coast Protectors."

The community potluck was part of a four-day walk. The outreach for that walk notes, "From May 25th-28th, we will march from Songhees territory in Victoria to the Kinder Morgan terminal on Tsleil-Waututh territory in Burnaby to show our support for and solidarity with the 22 municipalities, 59 First Nations and hundreds of thousands of British Columbians who oppose the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain expansion."

The Trudeau government approved the proposed expansion of the 1,150 kilometre Alberta-British Columbia pipeline in November 2016. The expansion would create a twinned pipeline increasing the nominal capacity of the system from 300,000 barrels per day to 890,000 barrels per day. Overall, the pipeline would cross 1309 water courses in Alberta and British Columbia. It would also enable a continued expansion of the tar sands in northern Alberta and produce between 20 to 26 mega tonnes of upstream carbon pollution a year.

The Council of Canadians has been opposing the Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline since August 2011.
