A blockade established by land defenders on August 6 against the Junex Inc. Galt Wells oil project site in eastern Quebec was dismantled by police last night.

Radio-Canada reports (in French), "At approximately 8:00 pm on Monday [August 15], police officers dismantled the barricade established by anti-petroleum activists at the well number 4 of the Junex oil exploration company. Police officers forcefully entered the scene with an armored truck and an ambulance on the forest road where the hooded demonstrators had set up. One person was arrested during the operation."

Trycia Bazinet has posted on Facebook, "Our friend Freddy has been arrested by the SQ for coming as an ally on Mi'kmaq territory to uphold his responsibility to defend lands and waters." A community petition demanding his release can be found here: [ https://secure.avaaz.org/en/petition/St ... oHash%2Ben ].

In November 2016, the Canadian Press explained, "Junex Inc. is looking to become Quebec’s first oil producer in decades after announcing that it’s recovered through testing the most crude from a single well in the province’s history. The company has applied for a provincial permit to begin production by next spring after saying that its Galt No. 4 horizontal well produced nearly 18,000 barrels of light, sweet crude during eight months of testing. ...Preliminary estimates say Junex’s Galt property has 557 million barrels of oil, of which about 10 per cent is recoverable."

On August 9, Radio-Canada reported (in French), "A group of anti-petroleum activists has been blocking access to Junex's Galt No. 4 well near Murdochville since Sunday [August 6]. Tree trunks were installed on the road. A dozen hooded individuals prevent access to facilities located about 20 km from Gaspé. Other protesters reportedly set up camp on the site of Well #4. A support camp, at the junction of Route 198, was set up by Environment Plus, Tuesday [August 8], at the end of the day. Demonstrators who define themselves as 'protectors and protectors of water' are calling for the immediate end of all gas and petroleum exploitation activities in the Gaspé Peninsula..."

And the Canadian Press reported, "Environmental groups in the Gaspésie are supporting these protesters... Environment Vert Plus spokesperson Pascal Bergeron said he considers the actions taken by this group, which wishes to remain anonymous, to be justified. He says that environmentalists have used more conventional means to make themselves heard and that this strategy has not worked. The environmental group Oil Spot emphasizes that the Galt project represents a foot in the door for the gas industry that is trying to settle in the Gaspésie region and across Quebec."

An anonymous submission to MTL Counter-info highlighted, "On stolen Mi’gmaq territory, far from our barricades, we see the river that flows into the majestic Baie de Gaspe. In the distance, we see the forest, that was infinite, being devoured piece by piece by the colonial industries. The greediest of this world have come to extract these oil wells. Starting [August 6], we intervened and helped to reassert Mi’gmaq juridiction on the illegitimate property of Junex. On the road leading to the Galt Wells, we have set up a blockade and a camp as an act of solidarity with the land and water protectors of Turtle Island."
