-----REGINA----

“The Council of Canadians in Saskatchewan calls upon Premier Moe and the provincial government to require a full environmental assessment of the Serefina project as the first step in any development that includes fossil fuels,” said Jim Elliott, Chairperson of the Regina Chapter of the Council of Canadians after hearing of the potential environmental and social impacts of the proposed Glenbogie project.

“We stand with Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation Chief Ron Mitsuing and call the decision of Minister Duncan’s to not proceed with a full environmental assessment of this project as ill-advised and he must give the public the time to fully question and assess the validity and impacts of the planned project,” said Mr. Elliott.

“The use of water from the North Saskatchewan river requires the government to approve permits,” reported Mr. Elliott. “The use of this technique in Saskatchewan is still fairly new and needs a full assessment on its efficacy. Groundwater may be contaminated in the process of bringing the bitumen to the surface.”

Mr. Elliott concluded, “In this era of climate change mitigation and where the extraction of ANY more fossil fuels needs to be highly questioned given the inherent sunsetting of this dangerous commodity. This shows us that this government is not listening to the needs of Saskatchewan, Canada and the world’s future generations.”
