Devils lake not everything

Published in the Interlake Spectator on July 13, 2007, Page 22

Dear Editor

So Dwight Williamson, Director of Manitoba's Water Management and Science Branch believes that discharge from Devils Lake may pose a significant risk of injury to health and property ( Winnipeg Free Press June 22/07 ).

It is curious that Mr. Williamson does not attribute these same concerns to the dumping of liquid hog slurry waste on the surface of marginal lands in the Interlake.

If one were to visit the Interlake today you would find ditches and drains filled to capacity with run-off, making a bee-line to Lake Winnipeg. How does Mr. Williamson plan to keep hog slurry out of the lake?

The short answer is, he can't.

The incorporation of slurry into the soil is not a guarantee to keep it out of Lake Winnipeg, but dumping and leaving it on the surface virtually insures that it will reach Lake Winnipeg.

Mr. Williamson should be reminded that Manitoba's environmental concerns do not end at the Devils Lake outlet. Transfer of biota between watersheds is a concern, but so is the pollution that is created by the hog industry.

Sincerly

Things go on as usual in Manitoba's Interlake...

To whom it may concern:

Premier Doer may have called a moratorium into hog barn expansion, but in reality things go on as usual in Manitoba's Interlake.

Puratone's Interlake Weanlings barns are yet again indulging in the primitive practice of dumping their hog waste on the surface of marginal land along the Valhalla Beach road.

One can only guess how much of this filth was washed into Lake Winnipeg by the substantial rain on June27/08.

The stench that accompanies this practice is unbelievable, to say the least. In an article of June 25/08 Winnipeg Free Press, while discussing Manitoba's water resources, Water Stewardship Minister Christine Melnick is quoted as saying " we must make sure we are stewards. It's a matter of respecting natural resources and keeping them in place for our children, their children and their children's children".

Really, Minister Melnick?

I can tell the Minister that we have three wonderful grand children, who have sadly not dipped their toes into our polluted Lake Winnipeg and they no longer come to " the farm" when the pig factory down the road dumps their sewage lagoon.

We will not expose them to the horrific stench that permeates the very air we breath.

These things that I describe are not the results of actions by a considerate and caring person.

They are the result of actions by a stubborn and inconsiderate Premier, who has finally realized that he has gone way too far.

Sincerely
