MAKING PEACE VIGIL Newsletter - October 23, 2025
HELP WANTED: SUNDAY FUNDAY
Sunday Funday, which as you probably know, is a volunteer-run effort to provide food, a free clothing market, and general support for low-income and unhoused people every Sunday, noon – 3 pm. We have been doing this for over 2 years, locating outdoors at Pepsi Park during the warmer months and then moving indoors as it gets colder. This Sunday we are moving indoors to the Heritage Community Centre.
Sunday Funday needs two kinds of help. I’m wondering if we at Making Peace Vigil could provide some of it.
First, money to buy food and other supplies. If you can spare a bit of cash, please give it to me either in person or in an envelope on my verandah (2818-19th Ave). I will make the donation on behalf of Making Peace Vigil. Any amount, however small, will help.
Second, more volunteers are needed. What do Sunday Funday volunteers do? Here’s a little list: Welcome guests. Serve food. Organize clothing donations. Hang out. Clean up.
If you would like to volunteer, please give Tiro Mthembu a call and he’ll provide more information: 306-807-9354. Or you could simply show up at a Sunday Funday one Sunday at noon and let folks know you want to volunteer.
The Heritage Community Centre, where we will be for the next 5 months, is located at: 1770 Halifax St. There are, however, a couple of Sundays in November when we will have to be elsewhere. So, if you are planning to start in November, please contact me for location.
3 SPECIAL EVENTS
FRIDAY OCTOBER 24, NOON: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION RALLY, REGINA CITY HALL
October 24 is the International Day for Climate Justice. We are holding a climate rally to call on all levels of government; municipal, federal and provincial to urgently take action on climate change. Too often governments live in the present. They’re consumed with responding to immediate financial pressures and make excuses for ignoring the long-term impacts of human made climate change. As a result of decades of inaction, these impacts are now immediate, urgent and very much in the present.
We call on the City of Regina to immediately make more funding available to support its own Sustainability Framework! We call on the provincial government to take action to commit to its own prairie resilience plan, to invest deeply in renewable energy, as well as to commit to its obligation to move away from coal based power. We call on the federal government to implement bold environmental protections and regulations that will allow it to fulfill its own obligations under the Paris climate accord.

Talking circle to follow and a time of sharing ideas of what steps you might take to promote an end to The Occupation and to work for a just peace for Palestinians and Israelis. TUESDAY OCTOBER 28, 5 pm: VIRTUAL LAUNCH OF LISTEN! KNOWING THE WORLD AND FIGHTING TO CHANGE IT, by Scott Neigh
Listen! expands our understanding of "listening" as not an individual, passive act but as fundamental to constructing the social world — and to making it more just. As an activist, journalist, and host of Talking Radical Radio, Scott Neigh shares what he's learned from decades of conversing with other activists and scholars.
What does it mean to find oneself overwhelmed by a world in turmoil, as the relentless news of genocide, climate change, and police violence drives home the urgent need for radical change but doesn't tell us how to make it happen? Listen! reflects deeply on the role of listening — from the moment of injustice to how we respond as individuals, to struggles by collective social movements. The book explores what these movements are, how they work, and what they do in the world, as well as the knowledge generated in and by them and the importance of listening to and within them. By sharpening our critical insight into listening, we can explicitly centre sensory pathways to understanding and strengthen our strategies for collective liberation as embodied and situated knowers.
