MONDAY JANUARY 12, 10 am: COMMONWEAL ART'S CREATING SHARED FUTURES: INDIGENOUS-BLACK RELATIONS THROUGH THEATRE PROJECT, MÂMAWÊYATITÂN CENTRE (MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM) AT 3355 6TH AVE
The opening pipe ceremony and feast will mark the beginning of Phase One of this project and will serve as a grounding moment for relationship-building, reflection, and intention-setting as we move forward together. Led by workshop facilitators Joely BigEagle-Kequahtooway and Marnie Badham, the ceremony opens the first workshop, Unci Maka – Mitakuye Owas’íŋ (Mother Earth – We Are All Related), and sets the ethical and relational foundation for the entire project.
Attendance at the pipe ceremony is open to those who are interested in learning more about the project, building relationships in a good way, and beginning this work together with care and respect.
Some notes for the Pipe Ceremony:
Please bring a cushion or blanket to sit on, as people will sit on the floor for the pipe ceremony.
There are different protocols in different communities around gender and everyone is welcome to come as they are to the Pipe Ceremony, but generally:
If you identify as a woman, you can wear or bring a long skirt or cover your legs with a blanket.
If you are a person that menstruates, you are considered to be undergoing your own ceremony and are very powerful during this time. If you are menstruating or on your period, you are asked to sit on the outer circle of the Pipe Ceremony.
Two-Spirit, non-binary, or Genderqueer folks can choose which circle they want to join.
