After an intense five-person bidding war in a London, ON, auction house on September 27 and final bid by Paula Acoose and her husband, Ray McCallum from Fort Qu’Appelle, SK of $40,000, an original Treaty 4 medal will make its way home.

On Sept. 15 1874, 21 of the original signatories of Treaty 4 each received a medal to commemorate the occasion and they all disappeared until recently when, through online research, one was discovered and about to be auctioned as part of the private collection of the late Robert D. W. Band.

"Of course I cried because I realized that I was the first Treaty 4 First Nation person to hold it for possibly more than 100 years," she said.

The Treaty 4 Trust and Treaty 4 Council of Chiefs will launch a fundraising campaign to repay the couple for the costs associated with recovering the medal. No decision has been made on where the medal will be housed in the future.
