THURSDAY NOVEMBER 14, 7 pm: LAUNCH OF NEW BOOK BY REGINA’S BRUCE RICE— STANDSTILL: A HOPEWELL EARTHWORKS DAYBOOK AND OTHER ESSAYS, COMMUNITY COMMON ROOM, CENTRAL LIBRARY, LORNE ST & 12TH AVE
Standstill, has been called a book one must experience. This new collection of journals and essays takes us through Ohio’s two-thousand-year-old Hopewell Earthworks, which include the largest geometric earthworks in the world. It asks how can we respond authentically to such places and what they awaken in ourselves. But these are also the landscapes of a writer who lives in the present. Rice's moving and evocative stories show us art that has saved lives—sometimes hundreds of lives—and a social history of those who literally have lost their power of speech. Join us for a reading and discussion.
For the stargazers among us, the major lunar standstill in the title is when the the moon reaches its most northly point in the night sky every 18.6 years. It's happening right now.

We are honoured to announce that the first-ever Palestinian flag-raising ceremony in Regina, SK will take place on Friday, November 15, 2024 in front of City Hall, 2476 Victoria Ave. This ceremony is an opportunity for us to show our solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are suffering in Gaza and Palestine. It is a small but meaningful act to support those enduring hardship, and we encourage everyone to join us in standing together for justice and peace. Thanks so much and we hope to see you there. Through the Barghouthi family and in-depth interviews with the people who know Marwan best, Tomorrow’s Freedom takes you on a brutally honest and transformative journey into the heart of the occupation.
The film will be introduced by Melanie Rose, a Regina-based artist and educator with family in Israel's prison.
The film screening is hosted by Palestine Solidarity Regina and is not a Regina Public Library event. Admission is by donation.
