Russian opposition leader killed after denouncing Vladimir Putin's policies

The Associated Press Posted: Feb 28, 2015 6:52 AM ET| Last Updated: Feb 28, 2015 6:52 AM ET

A few hours after going on the radio to denounce President Vladimir Putin's policies as mad, charismatic opposition leader Boris Nemtsov was gunned down late Friday as he walked near the Kremlin. Colleagues in Russia's beleaguered and marginalized opposition pointed fingers at the state or at assailants fired up by fervent nationalist sentiment in state-controlled news media. But Putin and other Russian politicians suggested the brazen attack was a provocation against the state. Nemtsov, 55, was shot around 11:40 p.m. while walking with a female companion — a Ukrainian citizen — on a bridge over the Moscow River about 400 metres from the Kremlin. Russia's Investigative Committee said at least seven shots were fired. Nemtsov was to have been a prominent participant in a march planned for Sunday in a Moscow to protest Russia's policies in Ukraine, where the West alleges the Kremlin has provided troops and equipment to separatist rebels, and the economic crisis sparked by Western sanctions over Ukraine and the plunge in oil prices. He casts a long shadow over globe. Russian leader Vladimir Putin has outlasted three American presidents and is on track to stay in power until 2024. His incursions in Georgia, the Crimea and Ukraine have rattled the West, while his crackdowns inside Russia have riled his democratic opponents.

But a joint investigation by the fifth estate and PBS’ Frontline reveals an even darker side to one of the most powerful leaders in the world: Allegations of criminal activity dating as far back as his early days as a top official in St. Petersburg; ties to organized crime and money-laundering activities; and a secret personal fortune said to be in the billions.

“Putin’s Long Shadow” also raises disturbing questions about the role the Russian security services played in four apartment building bombings in Moscow and other cities in 1999 that killed nearly 300 people – a tragedy Putin blamed on terrorists and used to cement his power.

Host Gillian Findlay talks to a senior police officer who tried to arrest Putin on corruption charges; an investigator who was jailed for asking too many questions about the apartment bombings; and Russian businessmen who detail the levels of corruption and collusion.

QUOTE: “Heroes don’t die and these bullets target each of us.”

Thousands gathered at a rally in commemoration of the murdered opposition figure Boris Nemtsov in the Russian capital. Demonstrators have marched through the center of Moscow, crossing over the bridge near the Kremlin where the politician was shot dead.

At the beginning of the rally, Moscow police said around 16,500 people were taking part. After it ended at about 5 pm local time, police said that according to their estimates at least 21,000 people attended the event. Opposition member Sergey Davidis said nearly 50,000 people participated in the march, RIA Novosti reported.

The rally’s participants marched in silence. Those in the front row were holding a banner reading, “Heroes don’t die and these bullets target each of us.”

Boris Nemtsov's last walk

Did Boris Nemtsov, the bogeyman of righteous Russians, push his luck by provoking Putin repeatedly?

You could see his tall imposing frame and handsome face towering over his comrades-in-arms in the front line of anti-Kremlin demonstrations that rumbled down Moscow streets. The demonstrations would often end with riot police twisting his arms behind his back and bundling him into a waiting van, to be whisked off for his usual 15 days of "administrative arrest".

His friends and admirers were at times discomfited by the sheer guts or recklessness of the man taking on the Russian president, walking the street like an ordinary citizen, no bodyguards, no retinue. That walk ended last Friday night on a wet pavement, a stone's throw away from the Kremlin, when assailants from an unmarked car shot him six times in the back.

Boris Nemtsov's meteoric rise from a quantum physics scientist to a reform-minded first deputy prime minister in President Boris Yeltsin's administration was the stuff of Russian legend. In between, as governor, he instituted unprecedented reforms and achieved spectacular growth in Nizhny Novgorod, one of Russia's depressed regions.

The Boris Nemtsov Assassination: Russia’s “Non-system” Opposition Refuses to Blame the Kremlin

[ http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-boris- ... in/5434206 ]

By The Saker Global Research, March 01, 2015

EXCERPT:

Everybody, pro and anti Kremlin, agree that it is absolutely essential that this crime be solved. Since I personally believe that this was a US/UK organized false flag, I fully expect that somebody will be found and, as we say in Russian, that the “(trail) end will end in the water” meaning that there will be no proof of western involvement. If fact, even if the FSB *does* come across such proof, the Russians will most likely not make it public but use it behind the scenes. As for those who organized it, they also need somebody to get caught because if nobody ever gets caught, then this looks way too professional, but if a small cell of, say, rabid anti-Semitic nationalists, does get caught, then that exculpates all other possible suspects. Considering that the crime happened 200m away from the Kremlin, and that the city center is laced with cameras, I fully expect an arrest in the next 48 hours, a week max.

The bottom line is that in Russia this false flag is already a clear failure, not even the notorious Russian “liberal” or “democratic” “non-system” opposition wants to touch this thing. This is very good news indeed. In the West, of course, this is a different story, the AngloZionist will use that to a max, no doubt here at all. [ . . . .]

Boris Nemtsov's support for Western sanctions against Russia possible assassination motive

[ http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/boris-nemt ... -1.2998897 ]

Slain opposition leader had intimate knowledge of Russia's economic weak spots

By Daniel Schwartz, CBC News Posted: Mar 18, 2015 11:00 AM ET| Last Updated: Mar 18, 2015 11:00 AM ET

A close colleague of assassinated Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov says Nemtsov's support for Western sanctions in response to Russia's seizure of Crimea from Ukraine may be why he was gunned down on Feb. 27.

A year ago today Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty annexing Crimea, triggering a wave of Western sanctions.

The previous month, Putin had sent Russian special forces to occupy the Russian base and the larger centres on the Crimean Peninsula, on the Black Sea, something he denied at the time.

As for Nemtsov, he had been an important opposition voice on Crimea over the last year. Even his last Facebook post, on the day he died, was marking the first anniversary of the seizure of the Crimean parliament by pro-Russian gunmen.

The parliamentarians in the chamber then voted to hold the referendum on autonomy for Crimea.

"This one episode tells [us] about the total unlawfulness of Crimea’s seizure," Nemtsov wrote.
