KURTENBACH: Guns
Guns.

To the Editor,
The recent murder of 49 human beings in Orlando is a particularly monstrous and uncivilized act. The killer was an unfortunate delusional person who was known by law officials, but managed to buy guns and ammunition to carry out this massacre.
The Constitution of the United States gives its citizens the right to bear arms; on average, every 100 Americans possess 112.6 guns. Is it the easy access to guns that resulted in 12,000 Americans being killed by guns in 2015 - through homicide, suicide and accidental deaths – with another 25,000 people injured in gun-related incidents?
On average in Canada, 100 Canadians possess 30.8 guns. The Supreme Court of Canada has stated that "Canadians, unlike Americans, do not have the constitutional right to bear arms . . . . Most Canadians prefer to have the peace of mind and sense of security derived from the knowledge that the possession of automatic weapons is prohibited." - Is gun ownership a legal right in Canada? - July 31, 2014 [ http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/is-gun- ... -1.2723893 ]
In Canada, we expect our police departments to keep guns out of the hands of people who may or may not be totally responsible with how they handle and use guns. With fewer guns around, we all will feel more secure.
Canadians want to be recognized as a civilized people. We need to be seen to promote peace-making and peace-keeping.
