National Day of Action against Islamophobia and White Supremacy, February 4

The Council of Canadians has endorsed an upcoming National Day of Action against Islamophobia and White Supremacy.

Islamophobia refers to fear, prejudice, hatred or dislike directed against Islam or Muslims. There are about 1.6 billion followers of Islam globally, that's almost a quarter of the world's population.

And Salon magazine explains, "White nationalism (and its ideological companion 'white supremacy') is an inherently racist, violent and regressive ideology that’s prefaced on a belief in the racial and cultural superiority of 'white' or 'European-American' civilization. In the United States, white nationalists circulate old stereotypes about 'black crime', 'urban violence' and 'black poverty', presenting black people as victims of their own 'bad culture' rather than institutional white racism."

An example of this would be US President Donald Trump stating that Mexican migrants "are bringing crime" into the US, when in fact the crime rate among first-generation immigrants is lower than that of those born in the United States.

CBC columnist Neil Macdonald has also noted, "Just about every single [mass murderer] in our modern history has been a Canadian-born, Canadian citizen, and usually white and Christian, meaning extreme vetting of immigrants from places like Yemen and Iraq wouldn't have done a thing to prevent their predations. Will Donald Trump begin banning white nationalist Christians from Canada?"

The demands of the day of action include:

1- The Canadian government must make an immediate public condemnation of the executive order by President Trump that bans Muslim visa-holders from seven countries [ http://canadians.org/blog/trudeau-shoul ... -countries ] and also bans all refugees from entering the US.

2- Canada must immediately open the Canada-USA border. This includes revocation of the Safe Third Country agreement [ http://canadians.org/blog/council-calls ... -agreement ] which bars most refugee claimants entering from the United States over land to claim asylum in Canada. The Designated Country of Origin list, which makes it almost impossible for US citizens and citizens of forty other countries to claim asylum in Canada, must be eliminated.

3- Canada must end racist, anti-refugee, anti-Black, Islamophobic exclusion of migrants and refugees within this colonial border.
This includes ending the system of indefinite immigration detention [ http://canadians.org/blog/council-canad ... n-migrants ]. The federal government must create a regularization program so that all undocumented residents can live here with their families rather than fear mass deportation. Migrant workers in Canada must also be given permanent status [ http://canadians.org/blog/council-canad ... ive-reform ] and open work permits. We want real, not symbolic, sanctuaries that guarantee access to services and refuse collaboration with Canadian and American border agents.

4- Canada must rescind all federal legislation that attacks racialized Black and Brown Muslims and refugees, including the Zero Tolerance for Barbaric Cultural Practices Act as well as anti-terror legislation such as Security Certificates [ http://canadians.org/blog/supreme-court ... -injustice ] and Bill C51. [ http://canadians.org/blog/27-chapters-t ... ainst-c-51 ]

This statement was initiated by Black Lives Matter-Toronto, is supported by No One Is Illegal, Idle No More, Justicia for Migrant Workers, the Tamil Freedom Coalition and other groups, and has been endorsed by Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, various CUPE and OPSEU locals, The Leap, and others.

The Council of Canadians PEI chapter joined with thousands today to march against Islamophobia, White Supremacy and government policies in both Canada and the United States that discriminate against refugees.

CBC reports, "Islanders marched as part of the National Day of Action against Islamophobia and White Supremacy. The march began at 11:30 a.m. at the bottom of Queen Street and continued to Province House."

The Guardian adds, "More than 2,000 Islanders showed their support of the Muslim community during a massive silent march in Charlottetown on Saturday. The group, which included Muslim and non-Muslim participants, held the march following last Sunday’s shooting at a Quebec mosque that saw six killed. The solidarity march also included some prayers, speeches and meditative silences."

That article highlights, "The march was also politically charged, with speakers blasting U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Omair Imiaz, who spoke on behalf of the National Council of Canadian Muslims, said the group was deeply concerned about rising Islamophobia within Canada. 'We fear (Trump’s) policy will also aggravate this phenomenon', said Imiaz."

The organizers of the march have noted, "There is a need for Canada to step up and rescind many of its immigration policies. Some of our legislation creates hardship for refugee claimants. Now with the actions of the new US President, Canada’s policies create extremely dangerous situations for refugees. For example the Safe Third Country Agreement bars many refugees from entering Canada from the US over land to claim asylum in Canada. Many Canadians are unaware that the anti-terrorism legislation as found in Bill C-51 creates an anti-Muslim environment."

The Council of Canadians London chapter marched on the streets and rallied in Victoria Park today against Islamophobia and White Supremacy.

CTV reports, "Londoners are joining others across the country and at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto Saturday in the National Day of Action against Islamophobia. The rallies are in solidarity with six Muslims massacred in Quebec City, and in opposition to Trump’s travel ban on Muslims and refugees. Organizers want the federal government to rescind the Safe Third Country Agreement and Designated Country of Origin list."

The article highlights, "In less than a week, over 150 organizations have endorsed the National Day of Action against Islamophobia and White Supremacy. Civil society across the country, from national unions that represent teachers, postal workers and other professions to student associations and environmental groups, have united."

The Council of Canadians is one of the organizations that endorsed this day of action.

Islamophobia is a term that refers to fear, prejudice, hatred or dislike directed against Islam or Muslims. And Salon magazine has explained, "White nationalism (and its ideological companion 'white supremacy') is an inherently racist, violent and regressive ideology that’s prefaced on a belief in the racial and cultural superiority of 'white' or 'European-American' civilization."

The demands of today's day of action include:

1- The Canadian government must make an immediate public condemnation of the executive order by President Trump that bans Muslim visa-holders from seven countries and also bans all refugees from entering the US.

2- Canada must immediately open the Canada-USA border. This includes revocation of the Safe Third Country agreement which bars most refugee claimants entering from the United States over land to claim asylum in Canada. 4- Canada must rescind all federal legislation that attacks racialized Black and Brown Muslims and refugees, including the Zero Tolerance for Barbaric Cultural Practices Act as well as anti-terror legislation such as Security Certificates and Bill C51.

The demands are from a statement initiated by Black Lives Matter-Toronto, supported by No One Is Illegal, Idle No More, Justicia for Migrant Workers, the Tamil Freedom Coalition and other groups, and endorsed by Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, various CUPE and OPSEU locals, The Leap, and others.

Ottawa chapter rallies against Islamophobia

[ http://canadians.org/blog/ottawa-chapte ... lamophobia ]

February 4, 2017 - 10:30pm

The Council of Canadians Ottawa chapter rallied against Islamophobia this afternoon.

The chapter tweeted, "Solidarity Against Islamophobia in #ottcity #RefugeesWelcome #SilenceIsViolence"

CBC reports, "In Ottawa, an estimated 300 people turned up at the Human Rights Monument, chanting and holding up signs protesting U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order that temporarily banned travel for people from seven predominately Muslim countries."

The gathering marched from the Human Rights Monument at Laurier and Elgin down to the US Embassy on Sussex Drive.

The Ottawa Citizen notes, "The Ottawa rally attracted a diverse, mostly non-Muslim crowd demonstrating support for the six Muslim men killed in a mosque in Quebec City, protesting U.S. President Donald Trump’s ban on travellers from seven Muslim-majority countries, and calling for an overhaul to Canada’s immigration laws."

That article highlights, “'Sometimes things reach a breaking point and we have to say, enough is enough', Dylan Penner, one of the organizers [and Council of Canadians media officer], told the crowd to cheers. 'There is more than one kind of power. Trump has presidential power. We have people power.'"

The newspaper also notes, "The rally began with speeches, including a call for support to declare Ottawa a 'sanctuary city' for migrants caught in the travel ban. Somerset ward Coun. Catherine McKenney plans to present a motion this week aimed at ensuring that undocumented immigrants have access to city services without fear of being detained or deported."

The Council of Canadians supports the sanctuary city movement. The 'Sanctuary City Ottawa Ville Sanctuaire' Facebook page can be found here: [ https://www.facebook.com/SanctuaryCityO ... nref=story ]
