Council of Canadians Board member Alice de Wolff to lead discussion on feminism and activism

Council of Canadians Board member Alice de Wolff will be leading a discussion on feminism and activism on Thursday March 9.

As noted in the Comox Valley Record, "Join North Island College Thursday, March 9 for "Status Quo? The Unfinished Business of Feminism in Canada", a documentary about the evolution of feminism in Canada and the ongoing struggle for women's rights. Activist Alice de Wolff will lead a post-film discussion, answering questions about her first-hand experience over four decades of feminism and activism."

The article highlights, "She is a national board member on the Council of Canadians and, as director of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women in the late-1980s and early-90s, was involved in some of the film's key events."

The Council of Canadians also participated in and supported today's #DayWithoutAWoman general strike.

The promotion for this on the organizing website had noted, "On International Women's Day, March 8th, women and our allies will act together for equity, justice and the human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people, through a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity."

That website adds, "In the same spirit of love and liberation that inspired the Women's March, we join together in making March 8th A Day Without a Woman, recognizing the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system--while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity."

The strike took place in about forty countries around the world.

The Council of Canadians denounces sexism and gender-based violence and harassment - and is committed to ending sexism and violence against women. We believe in gender justice and the protection of the human rights of gay, lesbian, bi, queer, trans, Two-Spirit and gender nonconforming people.
