Released on July 17, 2019

Premier Scott Moe announced today that Saskatchewan’s 23rd Lieutenant Governor, Russell B. Mirasty, will be sworn in on Thursday, July 18, 2019, at Government House. To allow for an immediate commencement of duties, the new Lieutenant Governor will assume office during a swearing in ceremony, with a formal installation ceremony to occur at a later date at the Legislative Building.
“I look forward to working with Mr. Mirasty as he assumes the role of Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor,” Moe said. “With a deep connection to Saskatchewan’s Indigenous communities and a background of service with the RCMP, Mr. Mirasty will bring a valuable perspective to a role that has a rich history of service to the people of Saskatchewan.”

Mr. Mirasty was born and raised in La Ronge and is a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band who speaks Cree fluently, and will be Saskatchewan’s first Indigenous Lieutenant Governor. He joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1976 and served in a variety of roles across Canada until his retirement in 2013. In 2010, he was appointed the Commanding Officer for ‘F’ Division (Saskatchewan) at the rank of Assistant Commissioner. In this role, he was the first First Nations person to be appointed as the head of the RCMP for a province. He retired from the RCMP in December 2013.

Mr. Mirasty will replace the Honourable W. Thomas Molloy, who passed away on July 2, 2019, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Under the Canadian constitution, Mr. Mirasty will serve as the representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the Province of Saskatchewan for at least five years following his appointment to the role by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, the Governor General of Canada, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister of Canada. -30-
