Democracy and Science . . .

Subject: What does this new government mean for science?

I’d like to extend a huge thank you to all of you for working hard to get science on the agenda this election! We saw lots of engagement around the #VoteScience campaign which led to great conversations on the future of science and research in Canada. It was amazing to see the science community come together and remind our representatives that Canadians care about science and want to see policies based on the best available evidence.

Now it’s time to think about what this new government means for science and research and how we can continue to make sure science is on the agenda.

The Liberals are still in power, but with a minority government so they will need to work with other parties in order to govern. The Liberals have a strong track record on science, and the NDP and Greens, parties the Liberals will likely need to cooperate with, also support several important facets of science and research in Canada, including a Chief Science Advisor, full implementation of the Fundamental Science Review recommendations, increased funding for federal science and measures to increase openness and transparency in science.

You can read more of our election analysis on our blog [ https://evidencefordemocracy.ca/en/cont ... an-science ] and in this recent article in Nature. [ https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586- ... 22025406=1 ]

The new government brings a lot of possibilities, but also a lot of uncertainty. Going forward, especially in a minority government situation, we will have to work extra hard to keep science and evidence on the agenda. With the drive we saw from scientists over the election period, we can continue to tackle these issues and continue standing up for science in Canada!

Thanks for all you do.
