Jordan’s Principle is a legal rule and child-first principle named in memory of Jordan River Anderson, a child from Norway House Cree Nation who died in a Winnipeg hospital, never having been in his family home because of a jurisdictional battle between the federal and provincial governments about who would pay for his homecare. Jordan’s Principle was created to ensure that First Nations children receive the services and supports they need when they need them.

THURSDAY OCTOBER 26, 7 pm: CONDITIONS FOR COMMUNITY SAFETY—LESSONS FROM HALIFAX—A CONVERSATION WITH AMY SICILANO
As Halifax Regional Municipality's first Public Safety Advisor without a background in policing, I came to the role determined to put into practice what I learned through my academic and community-based experience: that the people closest to the impacts of violence are also closest to the solutions. This talk will trace my journey in Halifax to reframe the problem of reducing crime to creating the conditions for safety and wellbeing, and the solutions harvested from community that have been embedded in the city 's new Public Safety Strategy.

Amy resides in K'jipuktuk, unceeded Mi'kmaq territory. She holds a PhD in Urban Geography from the University of Toronto, and serves as Advisor to the Halifax Regional Municipality on issues related to community safety and wellbeing. She led the development of the municipality's new Public Safety Strategy, which aims to increase community-driven approaches to safety and reduce reliance on the criminal justice system. She is the proud mom of two beautiful boys, and loves to spend time exploring and learning about the world alongside them.
