1) CALLING FOR RENT CONTROL
The provincial NDP have developed a petition calling for rent control—which is badly needed! The petition, which is attached, is a paper petition, requiring 3 signatures per sheet. Please print off copies and start collecting signatures. Or, you can pick up copies of the petition from the table in my veranda: 2818-19th Ave. If the veranda door is locked, please ring the bell multiple times and knock loudly.

This Sunday, CBC’s Cross Country Checkup is going LIVE to talk about renoviction bans — and we need voices on the air supporting a ban.

Landlords will call in to say stronger tenant rights hurt their bottom line but we have a different story to tell. Call in and let them know why we need them NATION WIDE!

TIPS for what to say on air:
If you are an ACORN member, let them know.
Explain why renoviction bans matter:
Evidence from BC & Ontario show that they work! They keep housing affordable and keep tenants off the streets because...
They put the cost of displacement on landlords, not tenants.
They stop landlords from pushing out tenants for renovations that are unnecessary or could be done while the tenant stayed in their unit.
Tenants are protected in the few cases where major repairs are needed and require the unit to be vacant.
Share your story! If you’ve been renovicted (or know someone who has), explain how it impacted you — financially, emotionally, your health, your family.
Demand renoviction bans nationwide. The federal government can act by: setting minimum tenant rights standards, including renoviction protections; Tie to federal housing money so the provinces raise their standards.
Let’s make sure the country hears from tenants: Renovictions have no place in Canada.
