The Legacy of Ortona - Remembering the real price of peace

Charlie Angus / The Resistance - August 21, 2025 - Video

EXCERPT: "Fascism is on the move and Canada is once again on the frontline in the fight for democracy. All of us have been called up for active duty. We need to invoke the spirit of our ancestors who freed the world from tyranny.

This is why I keep thinking of the statue at Ortona.

Those veterans didn't want their struggle to be cast in jingoism or as a hero tale. They wanted us to reflect on the immense price of peace — paid for by ordinary and decent Canadian kids fighting evil in a far-off land.

They want us to do our part so that another young generation will not be sent into the killing zones. This is what sacrifice means. We have a duty to protect the peace they fought to win.

"To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep."
- John McCrae, Second Battle of Ypres, 1915

Like it or not, the torch has been passed.

I want to reassure those who fell at Ortona, and elsewhere that this generation of Canadians will not break faith. We will do our part.

It’s what Canadians do."
