The “Peace in Our Time” Moment

Why Trump’s Deal With Putin Echos Munich 1938

Charlie Angus - The Resistance - August 25, 2025

EXCERPT: "Nothing spells the breakdown of an international "rules-based order" quite like the spectacle of two powerful nations privately meeting to carve up a third nation without its consent. And this spectacle was sold to the world as a master class in peaceful diplomacy.

But the victim nation warned the world that if peace was predicated on carving up land for the aggressor, there would never be peace. The enemy would simply move their forces into the key geographic points that had been ceded so that the destruction of the victim nation could be made possible. And once that innocent nation is destroyed, other small European countries would be next.

Such was the power politics on display in Alaska, and it was a frightening replay of Munich 1938.

In the age of Putin and Trump, the words of Karl Marx continually haunt and taunt our arrogant suppositions: "History repeats itself – first as tragedy and then as farce." . . . .

As Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov admitted in 2022:

This is not about Ukraine at all, but the world order. The current crisis [the Russian invasion of Ukraine] is a fateful, epoch-making moment in modern history. It reflects the battle over what the world order will look like. . . . "
