Ryan Meili chosen as NDP's newest candidate in Saskatoon Meewasin

Ryan Meili will take over as the NDP’s newest candidate running for the Saskatoon Meewasin seat left vacant after MLA Roger Parent’s death in November.

Party members who live in the constituency cast 98 votes to decide between Meili and competitor John Parry. Meili, long seen as the favoured candidate, accepted his candidacy from NDP Opposition Leader Trent Wotherspoon.

“Right now this is a critical moment, this is a critical opportunity,” Wotherspoon told the crowd. “This byelection is our opportunity to tell the Sask. Party that they can’t keep dumping on Saskatchewan people and undermining the foundations that support the province … So this is our opportunity to show them that Saskatchewan’s people won’t give them a pass.”

Currently working as a physician, Meili said he sees his background as an asset in understanding the health care needs of Saskatchewan’s residents. He said he wants future healthcare policies to be based on evidence rather than ideology and desperation.
