Trudeau Liberals’ approach to politics is what West needs

Research has shown that the decline of an international order is usually preceded by an erosion of trust, legitimacy and consensus not just between countries, but also within the society of the hegemonic leader of the order. The West, of course, is the driving force behind the contemporary liberal world order. What is happening south of the border could have grave consequences. Other parts of the Western world should not assume that they are immune to phenomena that cause established political institutions and societal consensus to deteriorate.

In these times of danger and decay, other countries should take a cue from the Trudeau government’s approach. No party is ever perfect while in power. But the character of this Grit government to date—attentive, responsive, considerate, visionary and trustworthy—demonstrates qualities that are desperately needed to secure the health of the West and enhance the wellbeing of international society.
