The Council of Canadians will be participating in marches and demonstrations in Quebec City against the G7 summit taking place in La Malbaie, Quebec.

The Globe and Mail reports, "The Group of Seven summit unfolds next Friday and Saturday in La Malbaie, nearly two hours’ drive northeast of Quebec City. But the remoteness and massive security deployment at the summit site, coupled with the presence of hundreds of international journalists in Quebec City, is fuelling predictions that Quebec’s picturesque capital will [be the focal point] of anti-summit demonstrations."

The article continues, "Ten schools have announced they will shut for two days and daycares are telling parents to keep their kids home [and] 1,000 police officers are being put on duty in Quebec City, starting Thursday."

While this news report focuses on security concerns, it omits why there is opposition to the G7 itself. G7 summits have been used to promote 'free trade' agreements that undermine the public interest and violate Indigenous and workers rights, as well as advance a neo-liberal agenda of tax cuts, deregulation and privatization.

The following counter-activities are now being promoted:

• Thursday June 7, 6 pm - Popular and unitary march against the G7 and for the opening of all borders - Parc des Braves
• Friday June 8, 7:30 am - Perturbation Action - Corner of the François-de-Laval and Sainte-Anne boulevards
• Friday June 8 - Perturbation Day - everywhere in the National Capital Region
• Saturday June 9, 10 am to 3 pm - an Alternative Forum - this will happen in front of the National Assembly building
• Saturday June 9, 3 pm - Unitary protest - National Assembly building
• Saturday June 9, 7:30 pm - anti-G7 comedy show followed by music - Lucien-Borne Centre, 100 Ste-Foy Road

Please see the Anti-G7 Resistance Network/Réseau de résistance anti-G7 (RRAG7) website for the latest information on these activities: [ https://antig7.org/en ].

Our vision is for the G7 to be folded into the G195 (the more inclusive United Nations General Assembly), for the meetings to take place at the UN in New York (and to reallocate the billions now spent on the rotating summits to the public good, such as the provision of clean drinking water), and that human rights, economic inclusion, and environmental protection be the foundation for any discussion among world leaders.

Join us on the streets of Quebec City to say 'let this be the last G7 summit'.
