The barbarous phenomenon we recently witnessed in France has roots that go back to at least 1979 when the mujahedeen made their appearance in Afghanistan. At that time their ire was directed at the leftist Taraki government that had come into power in April of 1978. This governments ascension to power was a sudden and totally indigenous happening with equal surprise to both the USA and the USSR. [ . . . ]
