Canada diplomacy urgently needed for nuclear disarmament

In 1996 as part of their Advisory Opinion on the issue of whether it would ever be legal under international law to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons, the International Court of Justice stated:

“The destructive power of nuclear weapons cannot be contained in space or time. They have the potential to destroy all civilisation and the entire ecosystem of the planet.”

At the end of the Cold war, significant progress was made in reducing the massive nuclear weapons arsenals of the United States and former Soviet Union. Then, that progress stalled as tensions heated up again between East and West. Now, we have Russian military intervention in Crimea, NATO troops, including those of Canada, engaging in provocative military exercises and deployments, and obscenely expensive nuclear weapons modernization programs underway in the USA, and elsewhere.

Former American Defense Secretary, William Perry, warns that the danger of some sort of nuclear catastrophe befalling us is greater than it was during the Cold war and is rising. He blames public ignorance about the potential “nuclear doom” around the corner on the failure of foreign policy elites to give the issue the prominence it deserves.

In light of these alarming developments, which put the very future of our planet at risk, political leadership to kick start nuclear disarmament negotiations is urgently needed.

To this end, the Canadian Network for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons and 44 sponsoring organizations, including the Rideau Institute, have issued a Call to Action to the Government of Canada to play a greater leadership role in the abolition of nuclear weapons.
