Bev Sellars [ http://talonbooks.com/authors/bev-sellars ] had many roles in her community. She was elected chief of the Xat’sull (Soda Creek) First Nation in Williams Lake, B.C., from 1987 to 1993 and again from 2009 to 2015. She stepped forward and was featured in newspaper and television accounts when her community first spoke out against residential school abuses in the early 1990s. She also earned a history degree from the University of Victoria and a law degree from the University of British Columbia and served as adviser for the BC Treaty Commission. Her first book, They Called Me Number One: Secrets and Survival at an Indian Residential School (Talonbooks, 2013) won the 2014 George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature, took third prize in the 2014 Burt Award for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Literature and spent more than 40 weeks on the BC Bestseller List.
