The Council of Canadians Nelson chapter will be screening the documentary The Price We Pay on Jan. 19.

The film's website notes, "The Price We Pay is inspired by Brigitte Alepin’s book La Crise fiscale qui vient. ...Tax avoidance by big corporations and the wealthy – citizens of nowhere for tax purposes – is paving the way to historic levels of inequality and placing the tax burden on the middle class and the poor." On Dec. 26, Murray Dobbin wrote in the Tyee, "In terms of lost revenue, the key finding [of a recent report by Canadians for Tax Fairness] was the [Harper] government's systematic gutting of the tax division responsible for investigating offshore tax havens and recovering the revenue lost to the resulting tax evasion and avoidance. C4TF estimates that there is at least $199 billion in Canadian wealth hidden in tax havens around the world, resulting in the loss of up to $10 billion in revenue every year. The report calls on the Trudeau government to fundamentally change the [Canada Revenue Agency's] priorities -- away from harassing charities, NGOs and ordinary taxpayers making errors and onto the wealthy and large corporations where the vast majority of revenue is lost." Dobbin highlights, "It will be Finance Minister Bill Morneau who will ultimately decide how much of a priority to make of the tax haven issue." He then concludes, "Letting the need for a genuine national conversation about taxes slip to the back burner would be a mistake. Now that we have a government that says it believes in governing, the question of comprehensive progressive tax reform needs to be front and centre."

In their report, Canadians for Tax Fairness suggest seven recommendations the government could take for greater tax fairness, including, "A good beginning would be to amend corporate tax rules to require that off shore subsidiaries have a legitimate economic reason to be considered as a separate entity for tax purposes."

As noted in the Nelson Daily newspaper, "The Nelson Chapter of Council of Canadians is showing the film at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 19th at the Nelson Seniors Branch 51, 717 Vernon St. Following the documentary we will have a discussion AND take immediate action on the huge theft from Canadians. Everyone is welcome for a small donation. The Nelson Seniors Branch 51 is located at 717 Vernon Street next to Civic Theatre." [ http://thenelsondaily.com/megaphone-bla ... ovtVrvrtwF ]
