Parliamentary Committee investigating GM animals

House of Commons Agriculture Committee hearings on “Genetically Modified Animals for Human Consumption” started this morning in Ottawa. CBAN was there to follow what was said. Today, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association testified, government departments will testify on Thursday, and CBAN will testify on Tuesday October 4.

There are no GM food animals on the market anywhere in the world yet, but a GM salmon was approved in both Canada and the US and could be produced in the next two years. Like all other GM foods, the food products from GM animals would not be labeled in grocery stores. Do we need GM animals? Do GM animals raise special ethical and safety concerns? If they are allowed onto the market, should they be labeled for consumers to choose?

You can take action:

Write to the Committee Chair and/or Committee Members to share your views on genetically modifying farm animals. See the contacts at [ http://www.cban.ca/GManimals ]

If you are in Ottawa, you can come out to watch the Committee hearings in person or check here for proceedings: [ http://www.parl.gc.ca/Committees/en/AGRI/Meetings ]

Bayer–Monsanto Mega-Merger

Earlier this month, seed and chemical companies Monsanto and Bayer agreed to a $66-billion merger. In response, CBAN asked Canada’s Competition Bureau to investigate the impacts of this merger on farmers and the farm economy. Since then, CBAN has been interviewed on CBC Radio’s The Current and on Radio Canada International. Farm groups are also raising concerns about increasing corporate control over seeds: [ http://www.producer.com/2016/09/monsant ... ough-road/ ]

The merger of Bayer (the second largest pesticide company in the world) with Monsanto (the largest seed company and dominant GM seed company) is not a done deal. The deal needs to be approved by anti-trust regulators in 30 countries, including Canada. Click here to can send your comments to Canada’s Competition Bureau.

Thank you to everyone who filled out CBAN’s survey!

We learned a lot from your answers to our survey, and are excited to put your suggestions into action over the coming months! Thank you for taking the time and energy to help CBAN improve and strengthen our work.
