A major decision is expected by the British Columbia government in the coming days given the tenures from twenty fish farms are set to expire on June 20.

'Stand up for BC! Fish farms out!' rallies will be held tomorrow (June 13 at noon hour) in at least five communities outside the constituency offices of key NDP Members of the Legislative Assembly:

Victoria - Premier John Horgan's office (2806 Jacklin Rd)
Vancouver - Environment minister George Heyman's office (642 W Broadway)
Courtenay - Ronna-Rae Leonard's office (437 5th St)
Campbell River - Transport minister Claire Trevena's office (908 Island Hwy)
Port Moody - Rick Glumac's office (2708 St Johns St)

The outreach for these rallies highlights, "Fish farms are spreading parasites and diseases to our wild salmon, and their time is up. But Premier Horgan has still not decided what to do, so we need to give him and his government a nudge and make sure he does his job to defend our wild salmon and save our wild salmon jobs."

The Council of Canadians Comox Valley chapter and allies will also be holding a special event on Saturday June 16 starting at 10 am on the grounds of the Little Red Church at 2182 Comox Avenue in Comox.

The chapter's media release notes, "In the midst of the Comox Valley’s celebration of all things sea-food this month, one event will highlight the importance of and concerns about wild salmon. 'Love for WILD Salmon' will gather local food lovers, First Nations representatives, salmon stream protectors, and people concerned about the health of our coast for a family friendly event."

It adds, "Five First Nations in the region have stated that they do not want the farms in their territories. Most recently, the Musgamawg Dzawada’enux First Nation has claimed Aboriginal Title to the waters that house ten of the fish farms that are up for renewal."

The chapter further notes, "While the concerns are serious, the event will also be fun. Prizes will be awarded for the best wild salmon banners and costumes. The Kumugwe Dancers from the K’omox First Nation will open the event, and Quadra Island artists will share a new song. Speakers will include Darren Blaney, Chief, Homalco First Nation; Alexandra Morton, Marine Biologist; Molina Dawson, Cleansing Our Waters activist; and Adam Olsen, MLA, Saanich and the Islands."

If you live in British Columbia, please be sure to support these events and to contact your MLA [ https://www.leg.bc.ca/learn-about-us/members ] to express your opposition to any renewal of the fish farm tenures. Please do so as soon as possible given the decision could come before June 20.

The Council of Canadians first began raising concerns about farmed salmon in March 2013. Open-pen fish farms are the aquatic version of factory farming, are rampant with diseases and sea lice, pose a threat to the health of wild salmon and herring stocks, in turn endanger an important food source for bears and whales, and both violate Indigenous rights and threaten their traditional way of life.
