OTTAWA – In a surprise announcement this afternoon, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Paul Davis announced that the premiers are asking the federal government to finally step up to the plate and cover at least 25 per cent of all health care spending by the provinces and territories. The Council of Canadians has been at the Council of the Federation meeting in St. John's and is available to comment on this issue.

“The premiers finally addressed the elephant in the room,” says Michael Butler, Health Care Campaigner with the Council of Canadians. “We have been pointing it out all week. The next step in their leadership is to go beyond talk and to build the health care system Canadians need and deserve.”

With $43.5 billion still slated to be cut in the absence of a national health accord, this demand is a step in the right direction.
