The Council of Canadians Fredericton chapter is calling on Liberal MP Matt DeCourcey to keep his promise on electoral reform.

Their outreach notes, "On Tuesday evening, May 23rd, from 5:30pm - 6:15pm, we can send a clear message to MP Matt DeCourcey that his constituents want him to support the resumption of electoral reform."

That outreach adds, "The upcoming meeting of the Fredericton Federal Liberal Riding Associations in downtown Fredericton is a great opportunity to hold a rally in front of the building and let the Liberal members know that DeCourcey should listen to the peoples' concerns about breaking his promise. This is a non-partisan rally."

The chapter highlights, "DeCourcey was one of the committee members on the Parliamentary Committee for Electoral Reform. He knows first-hand that over 5 months of hearings, an overwhelming majority of Canadians told the Committee that they want an end to the first-past-the-post voting system and replaced with one that is fair, representative, and proportional, 88% of the experts the Committee heard and 87% the public who testified called for a proportional voting system."

We are now in the critical days before a vote in the House on the recommendations made by that 12-member committee (that had five Liberal MPs).

On December 1, 2016, the committee presented its report to the House. It recommended, "that the government should, as it develops a new electoral system ... minimize the level of distortion between the popular will of the electorate and the resultant seat allocations in Parliament."

But on February 1, despite his October 2015 election promise, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ruled out electoral reform.

This month is the deadline for the government to introduce legislation to implement electoral reform in time for the October 2019 federal election.

Council of Canadians chapters across the country are amplifying their efforts at this time to push for electoral reform.

Be sure to contact your Member of Parliament to tell them you support electoral reform and want to see legislation on it moving forward.
