Subject: NDP motion to stop FIPA is defeated

Thank you for writing to urge parliamentarians to stop the Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA).

As you may know, a motion introduced by NDP International Trade Critic Don Davies asked Parliament to stop the ratification of FIPA. Unfortunately, the Conservatives and Liberals joined together to defeat the NDP motion.

Now the Conservative government can continue with their original plan to ratify FIPA without a vote in Parliament. While time is running out, we will not let this issue go. That is why I am asking you to help by signing our petition calling on Prime Minister Harper to do the right thing and scrap this deal.

You can sign our petition at:

Don Davies continues to take the lead in challenging the lack of transparency and deficiencies of this agreement. He twice introduced a motion at the Standing Committee on International Trade to postpone FIPA so it could receive better scrutiny. While he pushed for the debate to be public, the Conservative majority ruled and the Committee met in secret.

For more information on Don's efforts, please visit:

Please be assured that the NDP will continue to speak out against any trade deal that is unfair, negotiated in secret, and would contain grave conditions relating to labour standards, human rights and the environment.

Thank you again for contacting my office on this very important issue. New Democrats will continue to work hard, every day, on your behalf. We have the vision, experience and the strong team to take on Stephen Harper's Conservatives.

All the best,

Thomas Mulcair, M.P. (Outremont)
Leader of the Official Opposition
New Democratic Party of Canada
