Thank you for taking the time to urge parliamentarians to stop the Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA).

New Democrats are disappointed with the Harper government's decision to ratify this uneven agreement with China — it fails to meet the standards of transparency and openness that Canadians expect. Ultimately, it exposes Canadian taxpayers to costly legal challenges via secretive tribunals that do not reflect acceptable standards of the rule of law.

Further, this lop-sided agreement will not guarantee Canadian investors the same rights that Chinese investors have secured. FIPA locks in existing discriminatory measures in China that will harm Canadian investors' interests. We are now stuck with a clause that will bind Canada for a period of 31 years.

New Democrats have raised many concerns against FIPA. NDP Critic for International Trade Don Davies consistently challenged FIPA — he twice called on the House of Commons International Trade Committee to study the agreement and demanded a halt to FIPA's ratification with a motion in Parliament and a direct appeal to Minister Fast.

Please be assured that the NDP will continue to speak out against any trade deal that is unfair, negotiated in secret, and would contain grave conditions relating to labour standards, human rights and the environment.

Thank you again for your interest.

All the best,
