Topic – CHALLENGE TO THE LEGALITY OF GMOs

Re: Schmeiser Versus Monsanto, Court Case set January 23, 2008, Saskatoon

The liability issue of the presence of RoundUp Ready canola which contaminated Percy Schmeiser’s fields in the crop year of 2005 will be addressed on a court date that has been set for January 23, 2008.

After the mediation that failed to produce an agreement, the court date was set to address the issue. In a statement released on May 18, 2007, Percy Schmeiser, Bruno, Saskatchewan, a long time grain and oilseed farmer stated, “I am disappointed mediation did not result in a settlement on the liability issue. However, at the same time I am optimistic now that a court date has been set the matter will finally be addressed.

Schmeiser is an outstanding farm activist. In the last six years he has traveled to every continent (some several times) speaking on the topic of “Farmers Rights to Save Their Own Seed.” This is likely the first time the pollution by GMOs has been challenged in a court in Canada - maybe even the world – since Prime Minister Bryan Mulroney passed the Plant Breeders Rights Act legislation in 1991 that created an opportunity for GMO development.
